The morning market, which supports Morioka's food scene, has a long history dating back to the early Meiji period.
Even before Morioka City was incorporated as a city in 1889, morning markets were held frequently in the area around Somon, which is now Minami-Odori 2-Chome, and were bustling and an essential part of the lives of Morioka residents.

However, a major turning point came in its history. In 1968, the Morioka Central Wholesale Market was opened in Tsushida, the former Tonan Village (now Morioka City). As a result, the farmers' shops that had been operating around Minami-Odori and Morioka Central Fruit and Vegetable Market were forced to vacate.
Both farmers and local residents were confused by the loss of a place where they could purchase produce directly from producers. So in November of the same year, the Morioka District Producers Market Association was established on the same Minami-Odori street, and a new "morning market" was started.

The "standing market" in the name of the association reflects the passion of the producers. They placed the produce they had painstakingly grown in a handcart and stood next to it to sell it, valuing a direct connection with consumers. This morning market quickly became a huge success and was loved by many local residents.
